The best way to maintain your climbing gear

In activities such as climbing it is essential to have appropriate and comfortable equipment to ensure our safety. It is also important to learn how to maintain this equipment in order to have it for many years. Proper care will help ensure that every time we use it, it will be in perfect condition. Caring for climbing equipment involves treating it, washing it and storing it properly. Here are some tips on how to maintain your climbing equipment.

Before using any climbing equipment, it is crucial to know the use and care guidelines for each piece of equipment as it will help prevent accidents.

When climbing, it is important to check the condition of the equipment before the activity. This helps to avoid possible accidents. After the activity it is also important to check the materials, since they may have been damaged during the course of the climb.

It is important not to leave the equipment lying around as it may get damaged or dirty. Regarding storage, it is recommended to store it in a dry and well ventilated place, avoid direct sunlight and prevent it from coming into contact with acids or other strong chemicals.

To transport it safely the best way is to use the packaging used for storage, make sure there are no sharp objects nearby to avoid damage, and also avoid high temperatures when transporting as certain climbing items can overheat or get damaged.

Other tips to keep in mind are:

          • If you see small cracks or crevices in the soles of your shoes, it is recommended to clean them to avoid damaging them so quickly.

          • Climbing equipment should be rinsed after use in places close to the sea, as salt can damage them.

          • If our harness appears damaged a new one should be purchased as repair of this equipment is not recommended.

          • Climbing ropes should be stored in such a way that they are protected from other materials that could damage them.

In addition, if your equipment meets any of the following conditions, it should be discarded immediately to prevent accidents and protect your safety: if any of the plastic or fabric items are more than 10 years old, if you are not sure it can support your weight in the event of a fall, if it fell from a great height as it is most likely damaged and, finally, if you are using equipment you do not know anything about, including the owner.

It is important that we take into account the possible risks that the area where we are going to climb may have.

As we mentioned earlier, making good use and maintenance of climbing equipment is of great importance, not only to ensure your safety, but also to feel safe so that you can have a clear head and thus, focus completely on the activity you are doing.
